If you have inherited jewelry, it is important to determine the value of the estate pieces. If you need to file an estate inventory, a formal appraisal will help determine the value of the estate, and if you choose to sell the jewelry, you can then fairly divide the proceeds among heirs. You may also have your jewelry appraised for insurance purposes. Such appraisals typically reflect the retail replacement cost in today's market.
